Promoting NUTRITIONAL AWARENESS and WATER SAFETY to Children

SENATOR RICHARD BLUMENTHAL & STEW LEONARD JR. TO "TAKE A DIP" IN SUPPORT OF NATIONAL WATER SAFETY AWARENESS MONTH
Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at 3:30 P.M.

WHAT:
May is National Water Safety Awareness month and to help raise awareness, Senator Richard Blumenthal and Stew Leonard Jr. have teamed up to spread Stew Leonard III Children's Charities' water safety message and celebrate Stewie the Duck's new ibook app!

On Wednesday, May 30 at 3:30 p.m., the Senator and Stew Jr. will read "Stewie the Duck Learns to Swim" at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk to 50 children from the Norwalk YMCA, all of whom are recipients of water safety scholarships from Stew Leonard III Children's Charities.

After the reading, both Senator Blumenthal and Stew will don their life safety vests and sit atop a specially designed dunk tank built for two people. The children will get a chance to "dunk" Stew Jr. and the Senator after they have correctly answered a water safety trivia question.

As swimming pools and beaches open for the season in our area, now is a critical time to remind both parents and children about water safety rules. Stewie the Duck's top three safety tips are:
  • Make Sure an Adult is Watching
  • Take Swimming Lessons
  • Always Wear a Life Vest
WHO:
Richard Blumenthal is serving his first term as a United States Senator from the State of Connecticut. Senator Blumenthal served an unprecedented five terms as Connecticut's Attorney General, fighting for people against large and powerful special interests. His aggressive law enforcement for consumer protection, environmental stewardship, labor rights, and personal privacy has helped reshape the role of state attorneys general nationwide, and resulted in the recovery of hundreds of millions of dollars for Connecticut taxpayers and consumers each year.

On January 1, 1989, a 21-month old toddler lost his life in a drowning accident. This sparked his parents to pledge that they would do everything in their power to prevent this tragedy from striking other families, since drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children under five. In 1990, that toddler's parents, Kim and Stew Leonard, founded the Stew Leonard III Children's Charities in memory of their son. Since this time, the Foundation has raised more than $1 million dollars to go towards water safety awareness and education, including providing swim scholarships and lifeguard training, along with writing and publishing two children's books on water safety and creating a free ibook app available on iTunes.
